Physiotherapy is a science-based medical or healthcare profession that promotes recovery and restoration of normal bodily functions in illness, injury or disability. It aims to restore movement and functional ability to your full potential. Physiotherapy is an independent profession where practitioners make our own treatment decisions and clinical judgements. We constantly reassess the results of treatments and adjust our collaborative approach accordingly for optimal outcomes.
We have a thorough understanding of how the body works, gained from many years of rigorous academic study and practice experience. We are therefore able to diagnose and manage many conditions.
A qualified physiotherapist is a trained medical practitioner (we study at a medical school and are trained in hospitals and clinics) and therefore you do not need a referral to attend therapy.
It is recommended that you seek professional help if you are experiencing pain that:
- is not improving
- is worsening
- is severe
- is recurrent or persistent
- negatively affects your mood
- is limiting your daily activities
No. You do not require a referral to attend physiotherapy. As first line practitioners, physiotherapists are trained to assess and manage your presenting condition accordingly. This may include referral to other healthcare practitioners.
Some medical aid schemes have their own terms and conditions regarding referral and coverage. Please consult with your medical aid scheme should you want to find out more about your coverage.
Yes. Appointments are scheduled to ensure adequate time for full patient care.
Initial consultations/assessments: 60 minutes
Follow-up consultations: 45-60 minutes
This will be dependent on your presenting concern and how long you have been experiencing it. Some clients may feel better after the initial session but QUICK FIXES usually DO NOT work! (as with all other things in life)
On average, clients attend 2-4 sessions. Post-surgical rehabilitation and more complex pain cases generally attend up to 6 sessions on a weekly or biweekly basis depending on the preference of the client.

Please bring along any referral letters, X-rays or scans to your first appointment. The affected body area will need to be seen. Ensure that you are comfortably dressed.
During the COVID-19 period, please bring along your own pillow and 2-3 towels, or any other linen that would make you feel comfortable.
During our first appointment, I will invite you to share the difficulties and/or reasons for which you seek help. I may also ask you about your strengths and resources, as well as your expectations and goals for therapy. In order to help me understand your difficulties a little better, I may also ask you some questions about your background. As my approach to healthcare is holistic, I may also ask about other aspects of your health and wellness as many of these contribute to the pain experience.
My approach is warm and empathic, which I hope will enable you to feel comfortable and safe enough to speak freely about your difficulties. Most of a diagnosis is formulated from this discussion.
We then move on to some physical testing and various movements to develop a single working diagnosis. A short treatment is included here with some guidance on how to continue your management at home. More can be done by you daily than can be done by me in a 60 minute session.
Once scheduled, your appointment time is reserved especially for you. Therefore, I ask clients to let me know of any cancellations at least 24 hours before your appointment time.
Kindly note that I reserve the right to charge a cancellation fee of R350 for late cancellations on the day of appointments, or for appointments not attended without notice.
Physiotherapy helps you to help yourself. As with all other healthcare services, physiotherapy IS NOT a passive intervention and it is DEFINITELY NOT A MASSAGE. We work together as a team to achieve your goals. Therefore, you have an active role in your own improvement. It is most effective when based on realistic goals and expectations.
Physiotherapy can help you to discover the patterns that keep you stuck in painful cycles, facilitate self- and body awareness, empower you with ways to deal with disability, identify the triggers to your pain, and build resiliency so that you can find well-being and get back to doing the things that you enjoy.
