STRAPPING and TAPING

Strapping and taping involves using external adhesive elastic or non-elastic “bandaging” to support tissue in the body. Many people feel a decrease in pain or discomfort or an increase in support when applied correctly. While it may not resolve a musculoskeletal issue on its own, it may help in quicker and more comfortable recovery.

I currently offer strapping and taping as part of our one-on-one sessions. I also offer specific area application pre-activity or event. These are 15-minute sessions and are limited to one body part per application.

SUPPORTIVE STRAPPING

Non-elastic and elastic strapping may be used to provide joint stability and reduce pain and swelling of painful joints. Usually, we use strapping for ligament support or if muscles around a joint are weak. Strapping may assist in providing support to these muscles by enhanced proprioception and co-ordination. Simply put, it is used to redirect forces in your body and, therefore, relieve pressure or strain off the painful area.

It is appropriate for many common conditions and is often used in combination with other physiotherapy treatments and modalities during the rehabilitative process.

KINESIOLOGY TAPING

The KinesioTaping® Method is a rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and tissues without restricting the body’s range of motion.

KinesioTape helps to decrease discomfort and facilitate lymphatic drainage (fluid movement) by microscopically lifting the skin. This lifting affect forms convolutions in the skin which allows for a decrease in inflammation and pressure. It can also improve use of certain muscle structures depending on how it is applied.

Based on years of clinical use, KinesioTape is specifically applied based on assessment to dictate a specific application to address your specific needs. In my clinic it has shown to be useful for swelling, inflammation, bruising, lipoedema, muscle tension or overactivity, and overall tissue and fascia support.
